Twenty-one MineSight clients gathered for MineQuest Swakopmund in Namibia last month.

New products graced an historic setting when Mintec’s Johannesburg office hosted its annual MineQuest seminar at the Swakopmund Hotel in Namibia. Swakopmund calls itself the Gateway to the Skeleton Coast with the dunes of the Namibian desert to the east and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The hotel is built around the 1901 station building, balancing modern features with historic architecture.

It’s a fitting venue for one of mining software’s oldest companies, which continues to produce exciting new products. In late June, clients from Rossing Uranuim, Namdeb and Tenke Fungurume learned more about some of those new products, including MineSight Atlas, MineSight Implicit Modeler, MineSight Stope and the Relative Surface Interpolator.

MineSight personnel from the Johannesburg office gave presentations over two days. Mintec founder and chairman, Fred Banfield, assisted with the presentations for MineSight Economic Planner and MineSight Stope, a complete toolkit for stope design, scheduling and reporting. Fred made the trip from Mintec headquarters in Tucson via MineQuest Perth, held a few days earlier.

“There was a lot of interest from the clients in the new products, especially MineSight Atlas and MineSight Implicit Modeler, which generated plenty of questions,” said Johannesburg general manager Rob Macfarlane.

Atlas is MineSight’s activity and resource-based scheduler. Implicit Modeler is a mathematical tool enabling geologists to build complex shapes directly from drillholes.

“At the end of Day 1, clients gathered for cocktails at the Whistle Stop Pub, which gave the international visitors a chance to sample some of Namibia’s finest brew and resulted in some lively MineSight discussions,” said Rob. “We finished of the second day with one-on-one sessions with the clients. This was particularly with clients taking the opportunity to get individual technical support and to also test some of the new products with their own data.

“We received some very positive feedback on results obtained using MineSight Implicit Modeler and the Relative Surface Interpolator.”

The Relative Surface Interpolator allows you to quickly create surface geometries between two limiting surfaces or in a solid, at set intervals.

After two days of presentations, Rob and his team also offered a short training course for short-term planners. The course focused on MineSight’s latest tools and enhancements.

“All in all, it was another successful MineQuest,” said Rob.
